Let me just start by making this assertion: I LOVE PLANTAIN!! No, you don’t understand! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PLANTAIN! I don’t want to bore you with all my childhood tales. But when I was growing up, boiled white rice, plantain and fish/beef was a Sunday afternoon ritual after church. It was something I looked forward to a lot. So much that after I had eaten my meal, I would go and sit by my dad, just because I knew he would give me one or two extra slices of plantain. In fact, I’ve bitten my tongue more than five times because of plantain. I really could eat a truckload of plantain.

And just as a little secret between you and I, the CEO of APPLECARTNG is a big plantain lover herself. Maybe it runs in the family. Anywayyyyy, I know some of you reading this are dodo lovers yourself. I mean, what’s there not to love about this delicious fruit? Plantain can be fried, boiled or roasted. Talk about versatility.

Plantain truly is awesome! But what exactly makes people like me rave about plantain? What are the benefits we derive from eating plantain in the various forms I mentioned? Here are some:

Anytime you eat plantain, you are doing your heart a favour. Plantain contains serotonin which helps to improve the blood flow in the body by dilating the arteries. Also, plantain is extremely rich in potassium. Potassium is a mineral that is found in a number of food we eat. It helps to prevent heart attacks and hypertension by controlling the heart rate and blood pressure of the body. Furthermore, plantain contains fiber which aids in reducing cholesterol level. All in all, plantain is very beneficial to the heart.

Everybody tries to eat as healthy as possible. They opt for fruits, vegetables and drink lots of water. But do you know that adding plantain to your diet can help boost weight loss and healthy eating? Yes. Plantain has very low carbohydrate content which makes it adequate for weight loss. It is also rich in fibre which helps bowel movement. Just boil your plantains, add some vegetables and chicken and light some candles for a sumptuous weekend dinner with friends and family.

It doesn’t really matter how old you are. You need stronger bones, nail, teeth and muscles. And to achieve this, you need to eat foods rich in calcium. Milk is a good source of calcium. Unripe plantain is also another fantastic source of calcium. Any meal you have which includes unripe plantain is good because it will prevent diseases that cause weakening of the bones. Try eating unripe plantain at least once or twice a week for six months for significant improvement in your bones, muscles and teeth.

Plantain is rich in vitamins A, B6 and C. Vitamin A is essential for eye health. Enough consumption of vitamin A will give you bright eyes, better vision, less eye infections and less dark circles. Vitamin B6 is essential for curing anemia which is a medical condition where someone has low red blood cells. In the long run, low blood cells causes weakness. That you don’t have anemia doesn’t mean you should stay away from plantain. Eating plantain can help your red blood cells to stay healthy and strong. Vitamin C is good for fighting off infections which leads to sicknesses. It also helps promote healthy gums and teeth. Can you see all the rich vitamins your body gets all from eating plantain?

Beta-carotene is a carotenoid found in plants and fruits. It is the factor responsible for the yellow and orange vibrant colour found in them. Beta-carotene works as an anti-oxidant which helps to fight free radicals in the body. Thus, eating plantain can keep you looking young, fresh and healthy for a long time as you consume them.

Plantains are awesome for the skin, brain and overall body health. In fact, plantain can help with kids and toddlers growth.
